    About the Task Force

The Natural Capital Investment Alliance is a Task Force that promotes and demonstrates the opportunity associated with natural capital investment as a new and scalable asset class. It was launched in 2021 and members seek to scale and create synergies between mainstream asset owners and asset managers through their commitment to mobilise at least $10 billion in private capital into natural capital investments, with an ambition to scale that investment in the coming years.

This ambition is underpinned by the following goals:

    1. Create a central hub for global asset managers to share their knowledge and expertise in natural capital investment opportunities;

    2. Operate as a knowledge partner to develop an enabling environment to mobilise private capital into natural capital; and

    3. Drive solutions that significantly scale private capital for nature and provide the Natural Capital Investment Alliance with a distinct global profile.

Task Force participants support to the following Principles, which align with the Terra Carta:

    1. Support innovation

Natural capital investments and allocations should include the development of, and investment in, innovative investment solutions that focus on resolving natural capital investment challenges.

    2. Integrate natural capital into investment decision-making

Natural capital considerations should be treated as equivalent to traditional investment factors in capital investment and allocation decisions.

    3. Prioritise scalability

Natural capital investments and allocations should prioritise commercial and market scalability to maximise potential impact.

    4. Explore benchmarks and measurements

Best practice natural capital investment benchmarking and measurement should be carried out to drive deliverables and accountability.

    5. Natural capital investing

Task Force members natural capital investments and allocations are consistent with traditional capital investments and allocations.

    6. Natural capital capacity building

Members to help support market awareness and knowledge of natural capital investing.

    7. Incentivise integration of natural capital considerations in all asset classes

Natural capital considerations should be integrated into investment decisions of existing asset classes.

    8. Advocate for greater disclosure

Enhanced policies and practices around the monitoring and disclosure of performance against natural capital-related objectives and impact should be actively encouraged.

Mobilising $10 billion towards Natural Capital Investment

The  Natural Capital Investment Alliance Task Force members aim to mobilise  $10bn of investment into natural capital assets.  A status update will be provided at the end of the 2023, reflecting members activity across open and closed-end investments into the asset class.

Private capital increasingly recognises the importance of finding new ways of working with Nature. More and more, investment into natural capital is focused on securing positive outcomes for Nature, while seizing value-creation opportunities, not only managing risk. This is why the Sustainable Markets Initiative’s Natural Capital Investment Alliance is bringing together asset managers and investors to mobilise investment into natural capital as a new and scalable asset class.
