Enabling Task Force
Fusion Task Force
About the Task Force
A core part of progressing towards a sustainable future is transitioning to a clean, reliable and affordable energy system. Integrating mature technologies like wind and solar is underway, and nascent but evolving solutions like clean hydrogen are becoming more feasible in the medium term.
Meanwhile, the transformative potential of accessing clean baseload power via fusion energy is also nearer on the horizon than many may realise. Fusion at scale could also unlock the broader potential of other critical decarbonisation activities, like building a clean hydrogen economy and broad deployment of direct air capture of CO2.
Making fusion commercially viable is key to realising this potential. While the technology is proven and there is growing support for fusion development, several strategic market barriers continue to impede its practical delivery into the global energy system.
The Fusion Task Force aims to convene, align, and engage private sector companies in breaking down these strategic barriers to establish the first fusion energy projects under development by the 2030s.
The Task Force will focus on the following key areas:
Producing the market signals needed to increase the pace of fusion’s commercialisation
Scaling the fusion value chain related to the minerals, materials, and industrial processes
Demonstrating how to create investable opportunities for the private sector to fill the value chain gaps in enabling technologies, materials, engineered products, and industrial processes needed for the final commercialisation of fusion
Addressing Private Sector Engagement, overcoming barriers to broader market participation and in public policy
Fostering industry and private sector understanding of fusion energy as a credible medium-term and long-term solution to achieving and sustaining a net zero economy
Christofer Mowry, CEO, Type One Energy GroupFusion is the power of the stars, the most powerful form of energy in the universe. Harnessing it is essential for delivering the transition to a long-term sustainable future. The science is now proven. Our challenge is to reimagine more ambitious market-driven, government-enabled, solutions that facilitate the market adoption of this clean technology in time to address climate change.
